In January 2026,<\/em> INAIL <\/em><\/a>published its first report on trends in work-related accidents and diseases recorded in 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The picture emerging from the INAIL annual report<\/strong> for 2025 shows a situation slightly worse than the previous year\u2019s. The total number of accident reports, in fact, has risen 1.4% <\/strong>compared to 2024, with 598,000 cases. While it should be interpreted by taking into due account employment levels, this figure confirms that the issue of safety in the workplace remains a key concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INAIL 2025 Report: Accidents on the way to and from work and at work<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When distinguishing between workers and students, however, the increase is less pronounced. If we exclude the reports concerning students, which account for around 14% of the total, the increase for workers alone reduces to 1% . On the whole, accidents directly linked to the workplace therefore remain fairly stable, whilst more critical signs are emerging in other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main factor influencing the total figure for 2025 is commuting accidents<\/strong>, i.e., those that occur during the journey to and from work. Incidents of this type continue to rise, coming close to 100,000, with an increase of over 3% compared to the previous year. These are mostly road traffic accidents<\/strong>, a phenomenon that partly eludes the traditional prevention measures put in place in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, accidents occurring during work <\/strong>show a much less significant increase (+0.5%). Behind this average figure, however, lie differing trends: while accidents have decreased in farming, in fact, accidents have increased in sectors such as construction, retail and healthcare, where risks remains high and are often linked to increasingly heavy workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gender differences: different risks, different dynamics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the INAIL 2025 report, a key factor in in accident dynamics is gender differences<\/strong>. For women, in fact, the greatest risk is not so much in the workplace as during travel. Over half the fatal accidents involving women occur while travelling between home and work, whereas for men a large majority of fatalities occur directly in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This disparity highlights two very different risk exposure patterns. While men are more frequently employed in sectors posing high operational hazards, such as construction, industry and farming, where the risk is predominantly \u201cinternal\u201d to the workplace, women are more commonly employed in the tertiary sector and services, where they are more exposed to risks associated with mobility<\/strong>, not least on account of fragmented working hours, a higher incidence of part-time work, and the so-called \u201ccare-related travel\u201d factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This analysis clearly shows that prevention cannot be gender-neutral: it must take into account the different working and living conditions<\/strong> affecting a person\u2019s exposure to risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INAIL 2025 Report: Fatal accidents and occupational diseases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, a total of 1,093 fatal accidents were reported. This figure remained largely unchanged from the previous year and was in keeping with pre-pandemic levels. The number of deaths taking place in the workplace decreased slightly, whilst those occurring whilst travelling to or from work increased. This confirms once again the central role played by road transport in safety statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the course of the year, a significant contribution to the overall number of fatalities also came from several multiple incidents<\/strong>: rare but extremely serious events involving collisions between vehicles, explosions, buildings collapsing, or accidents in confined spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside work-related accidents, the INAIL report also reveals a noticeable increase in occupational diseases,<\/strong> which in 2025 exceeded 98,000 reported cases, reflecting a double-digit growth compared to the previous year. The most widespread conditions remained those affecting the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, followed by disorders of the nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such conditions are often linked to prolonged exposure, poor posture, repetitive movements and heavy workloads. A phenomenon that draws attention not only to traumatic events, but also to the overall quality of the organization of work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eurostat findings<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The national report should be seen against a European context where trends vary across different countries. According to Eurostat data, in 2023 \u2013 the most recent year for which figures are available \u2013 over 2.8 million non-fatal accidents were recorded in the European Union, down 5% compared to 2022. During the same period, however, fatalities showed a slight increase<\/strong>, up from 3,286 to 3,298 deaths (+0.4%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the data comparable across countries with different data collection and worker protection systems, Eurostat uses standardised incidence rates<\/strong>. These rates are calculated based on 100,000 workers in the most comparable sectors. According to this indicator, in 2023 Italy had an occupational mortality rate of 1.20, substantially in line with the EU-27 average (1.23) and with the rate in Spain, lower compared to France but higher than in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for non-fatal accidents, Italy continues to maintain a lower incidence compared to the European average, with significantly lower rates than in countries such as France, Spain and Germany. It should also be noted that because of differences in data collection criteria \u2013 especially in terms of the handling of road traffic accidents during work, and, in some countries, including Italy, the recognition of Covid-19 infections as accidents. For this reason, analysing trends over time is more useful, while looking at absolute figures is less meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, the Inail 2025 report confirms that the issue of workplace safety cannot be addressed by focusing solely on construction sites and manufacturing facilities<\/strong>. The rise in commuting accidents, the effects of gender differences and the increase in occupational diseases all point to a need to broaden our perspective. Action should also be taken on the organisation of work, mobility and long-term prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are areas where investing today means reducing the human and social costs of work-related accidents and diseases tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
