Protective gloves, EN ISO 21420:2020 standard update

Protective gloves EN ISO 21420-2020 standard update

The new standard EN ISO 21420:2020 for protective gloves has been introduced from February 2020 and replaces the previous one EN 420:2003+A1:2009 (in force until 30 September 2020)

General requirements for protective gloves

The standard specifies the general requirements for protective gloves (innocuousness, comfort, marking, e information supplied by the manufacturer) and the correspondent test procedures for design and manufacture. Compared to the previous EN 420:2003, it introduces the following updates:

  • Change in pH value analysis
  • Introduction of Dimethylformamide (DMFa) content
  • Introduction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) content
  • Introduction of the pictogram for EN16350:2014 standard (gloves with electrostatic properties)
  • Change in sizing and measurement of glove
  • Marking addition and information supplied by the manufacturer.

What does it mean to pass from EN to EN ISO?

The acronym EN ISO means as follow:

  • EN : it is applied to the standards realized by the CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation). CEN standards are mandatory for all member countries and their purpose is to make the standard uniform to the European
  • ISO: it refers to the standards realized by the International Organization for Standardization. They are reference standards with worldwide value which the different countries decide whether to adopt or not.

Therefore we highlight the universal feature of this document whose perspective is to level out the European and International Anglo-Saxon standards in a consolidated text.

EN ISO 21420:2020 becomes law on the 1 st October 2020

All the protective gloves already certified by EN 420:2003+A1:2009 have not to be certified again because the old standard will be valid until the natural expiration date of the ongoing audit. On the contrary, the new gloves launched into the marketplace will be certified following the new standard UNI EN ISO 21420:2020 from the 1 st October 2020.
